AKC Scent Work is based along the same training that working detection dogs do. Over the levels of the sport, dogs find four different essential oil soaked cotton swabs hidden throughout a predetermined course. Neither the dog nor the handler knows where they are. This is one of the few sports where the dog takes the lead. Sports like obedience and agility develop your dog's trust in you. Scent Work and Tracking develop your trust in your dog.
Scent Work has two divisions, the Odor Detection Division, where the dogs search for the essential oils, and the Handler Discrimination Division, where the dog finds the handler's scent. Scent Work occurs in a variety of what is referred to as the Elements. These Elements are as follows: container, interior, exterior, and buried. Both container and buried place the scent in a small container. In container, that container is place among other similar containers to be detected, while buried that the box and places it under some sand or water. The scent is hidden among objects, inside for the interior element and outside for the exterior element.
